SCENE 1 (on the street)

NARRATOR: Two little demons are at work. And, here comes his famous and haunting Evil Boss.

The Evil One came to seek an account of the work that was destined for these two demons. Their function is to separate Carlos from Christ

MALVADO: So? What progress have you made in the project of removing Carlos from Christ?

SINGED: We are losing. Young people know the great power contained in the Bible and have resisted our attacks. When we try to prevent him from reading the Bible.

MALVADO: But they still aren’t aware of the great power of prayer, aren’t they?

SINGED: No! They just need to learn that nothing is impossible for God, and that they should always pray, and that they should pray for everything, and that they should never be discouraged…

CHAMUSCADINHO: And if you persevere in prayer, what can we do?

MALVADO: Ask questions, lots of doubts! You might say things like, “You are not worthy of praying! Last week you argued with your mother, you raised your voice at her. This is not the attitude of a Christian. So God doesn’t want to listen to a fake Christian like you.”

MALVADO: They should also say: “see? God did not answer your prayer. Do you know what that means? AND! God doesn’t want anything to do with you.”

MALVADO: Oh, you should also remind them that God knows all things, and if God knows, there is no need to pray.

CHAMUSCADINHO: Yes, but if they read the Bible they will find “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 They will understand that they must pray even if God already knows beforehand.

EVIL: You are such cowards! I am the one who goes to the strongest Christians, in their most difficult moments, to introduce some doubts and they will listen to me. Of course, after some time, if they read the Bible again and have contact with other Christians, they will put an end to their doubts. But as long as you have any doubts, we’re going to have a lot of fun. You don’t know how satisfying it is to torment Christians.

SINGED: Come on! To attack!

SCENE 2 (Carlos at home, near the phone)

(Phone rings)

DANIEL: (voice) Hello Carlos. What happened?

CARLOS: My parents are fighting a lot. They are talking about separation. I do not know what to do.

DANIEL: Let’s do what Christians always do when they have a big problem. Listen: Then Jesus told his disciples a parable, to show them that they should always pray and never lose heart.

He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared for man.

And there was a widow in that city who continually came to him, begging him, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’

“For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Although I do not fear God nor care for men,

this widow is bothering me; I’m going to do her justice so she doesn’t come and bother me'”.

And the Lord continued: “Listen to what the unjust judge says.

Will God not give justice to his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he continue to make them wait?

I tell you: he will give them justice, and quickly.” Luke 18:1-8

Let’s pray now, over the phone. “Lord, You are our heavenly father. The God of All Power and Honor. You know the problem between Carlos’ parents; Lord, we pray that they will accept Your son as Savior and that You will solve their problems. In the name of Jesus, amen.

CARLOS: Thank you Daniel. I will pray, pray and pray. We see. Goodbye

CARLOS: (praying) Lord, help my parents. May they receive from you what they need to live in harmony and love.

SINGED: Carlos, you don’t remember yelling at your mother last week. This is not the attitude of a Christian. God no longer loves you. How do you expect Him to listen to you? You hesitated, now there is no way.

CHAMUSCADINHO: Furthermore, when he had the opportunity, he did not give testimony as a Christian. You are nothing more than a hypocrite trying to pray like a true Christian.

CHAMUSCADO: And, remember? When you were 10 years old, you and your friends killed Dona Maria Fofoca’s dog? Do you think God will answer your prayers? He forgets!

(Daniel enters)

Carlos Daniel! Good to see you!

DANIEL: They canceled my English class and I thought I should tell you that we will take the test together.

CARLOS: I’m glad you came. I was trying to pray, but my mind is tormenting me with the bad things I’ve done. I am not worthy to pray. I’m not a good Christian. How will God hear the prayer of someone as evil as I am?

DANIEL: I want to ask you something; Is your salvation by faith or by works? Were you saved because you are a righteous and perfect person or was it Jesus [the Just and Perfect] who shed His Blood for you?

CARLOS: I am saved by faith! Jesus Christ, being Perfect, shed his blood for me. There is no justice in me.

DANIEL: Think with me; Do you have the right to pray to God because it is righteous? Or because you have been forgiven, do you have the right to talk to God?

CARLOS: Oh! I understand. I can never be fair. I only have the right to pray because I am forgiven.

Only when I refuse to confess my sins and receive forgiveness does God not listen to me.

It was the Devil who reminded me of my sins that had already been forgiven. Accusing me to convince me that I can’t pray. Satan is a liar.

DANIEL: Listen here to what is written in the Bible “for we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but rather one who, like us, has faced every kind of temptation, yet without sin.

Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with all confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:15,16

DANIEL: Christ understands us because he went through all the temptations we went through without sinning. We can always pray, yes we have sin. Firstly, we need to confess and ask for forgiveness, with the certainty that He has mercy on us. After he has confessed, your sin will be forgiven.

DANIEL: God said in Isaiah 43:25 “It is I, even I, who blot out your transgressions for my own sake, and who remembers your sins no more.” After that we can pray for God’s grace in every our needs.

CARLOS: I will never again listen to the Devil saying that I am not forgiven and I cannot pray because of something wrong I did, in the past or even today.

DANIEL: Just like that. Good Carlos, I have to go. I have an appointment with Fabiola. Let’s have some ice cream. Goodbye

CARLOS: Bye…

CARLOS: (praying) Lord, I pray for my parents. You are the Almighty, only You can perform miracles and solve problems out of love for my parents.

(in off)

MOTHER’S VOICE: Carlos Manuel Gutierrez Nunes, where did that lipstick mark on your shirt come from? It’s orange, I’ve never worn lipstick this color. Who is this other woman? You can take a suitcase with what’s yours and never come back here again. You can go with her. Here in this house never again!

FATHER’S VOICE: Look if it’s reasonable. This is not lipstick. It’s a text highlighter. But if you’re going to be suspicious of everything, put a detective following (or chasing) me 24 hours a day. I better go! There are prettier, younger women who would be very satisfied with a hard-working man who earns good money.

MOTHER’S VOICE: Always lying. Another lie, plus he’s a hottie! How much of our money was in bets that you lost tonight?

MOTHER’S VOICE: I better go. I’m going to my mother’s house. Carlinhos can live with me there. You can live alone, much better.

SINGED: Did you see Carlos? Have you seen the results of your prayers? If your prayer made the situation worse, it’s better not to pray.

CHAMUSCADINHO: Some people pray and receive results, but that’s not what happens to you. You are a failure.

CARLOS: Jesus told his disciples that they should always pray without ever losing heart. And I will believe in what is written in the Bible and not in what the demons say, period.

CHAMUSCADO: But the Bible says that God knows all things, why pray then?

CARLOS: The commandment of the Bible is to pray. It is part of the divine plan to give us the privilege of prayer. I really don’t understand, but I will obey God’s word.

SCENE III (The demons in the street)

SINGED: What are we going to do? Carlos is learning very quickly how to grow in the Christian life. He believes in the Bible, we fail.

CHAMUSCADINHO: When they firmly decide to obey the Word of God, even without understanding it… we are in trouble.

(the Evil One enters)

MALVADO: You never bring me good news. It’s because they are cowards, idiots, lazy, incapable, useless…

SINGED: (desperately) But this work of ours is impossible. Christ guaranteed victory two thousand years ago, on the cross. And all Christians know well that they are guaranteed victory. Besides, we will perish in the end. Our existence is horrible.

MAVADO: Enough! Enough of playing the victim. You can erase your faith. Convince him that the situation is normal, make him so busy that he doesn’t have time to pray. It will hinder his concentration when he is going to pray.

We never surrender! Our revenge is what everyone loses. The idea is that Carlos never asks his father or anyone else for help. Each one becoming more and more miserable.

SINGED: Attacking.

CHAMUSCADINHO: Yes, we can help Carlos fall in love with a pagan. Or even by a Christian…

SINGED: Good idea. Then you won’t have time to pray.

SCENE IV (before the youth meeting)

(Carlos is sitting waiting for Daniel and Cláudia arrives)

CLÁUDIA: Hello Carlos! You seem sad, what happened?

CARLOS: My parents are about to separate. I’m the youngest, my brothers are already married. It’s not easy in my house.

CHAMUSCADO: Cláudia, this is your chance to catch a man.

CLÁUDIA: My parents too. I know how we feel. I’ve been living in this situation for three years. And, there’s nothing that can be done. I have been taking refuge with friends, it is not easy. But we need to accept, life is like that.

CARLOS: What if they decide to separate? What do you intend to do?

CLÁUDIA: It’s likely that I’ll live with my grandma. I’m your favorite granddaughter.

SINGED: Go on, start flirting! Remember to look like a good Christian…

CLÁUDIA: Let’s not talk about sad things… I had already been told that you were very beautiful and charming.

CARLOS: Well then…

CLÁUDIA: What are your dreams for the future?

CARLOS: I want to be a Christian doctor and help a lot of people.

CLÁUDIA: What a cool goal! I always dreamed of being a nurse.

NARRATOR: Carlos started seeing Claudia. She was very understanding. Her thoughts were in tune with Carlos’s. But they rarely read the Bible.

SCENE V (Carlos’s room)

NARRATOR: Daniel arrives to visit

CARLOS: Good to see you! How are you?

DANIEL: I’m fine, but I’m worried about you…

CARLOS: But why?

DANIEL: Tell me the truth. Are you reading the Bible and praying every day?

CARLOS: Yeah… With work, school and my girlfriend… I barely have time.

DANIEL: Do you know if Cláudia has the habit of reading the Bible and praying?

CARLOS: I don’t know… But she went to church with me. Oh, and I also never saw her say anything against the things of God.

DANIEL: Who is most important to you? God or Claudia?

CARLOS: Well, it’s God, of course.

DANIEL: But aren’t you valuing Cláudia more than God? Do you always listen to her advice, but don’t have time to seek God’s Wisdom in the Bible?

DANIEL: Have you been praying for your parents? Or have you acted like Cláudia, leaving it aside and considering something normal?

DANIEL: As a Christian you are malnourished…

DANIEL: Carlos, Fabíola and I are going to start studying the Bible three times a week. You are invited! You can go with Cláudia, even without her, but come and study with us.

NARRATOR: When Carlos invited Cláudia to Bible studies, she always complained and said she wanted to go somewhere else.

Finally, Carlos was realizing that he would have to choose between Cláudia and God.

NARRATOR: For you too, the Devil has a thousand ways to distract and prevent you from praying. Decide not to fall for their tricks!

It is biblical teaching. “Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
